So, I'm guessing print books are safe for a little while longer after getting an email from Amazon today announcing the (not-so-)whopping price drop of $40 (down from $399).

To me, this is still an absurd price to pay for a device that makes something I (hardly ever) do easier.

When the Kindle drops below $100, then I'll start seriously considering it. For now, sorry, Amazon.

utterz-image
...of stuff!

This was the scene about 2 hours ago as I left TheApartment to run someerrands down in Soho. That's the pile of stuff we've been living fromfor the past 3 weeks. There are 3 tiny shopping bags, a couple of smallboxes and half-a-bag of groceries at our friend David's place still, butwe can go back to get those any time and just take the subway home.

We took a car service up and the driver was great--quiet, but great. Heseemed genuinely happy to help us get our stuff to our new home.

Since I left on my errands, a lot has happened.

Just as I was heading into the subway I heard a single crack ofthunder. I looked up to see clouds, but nothing directly overhead thatwas threatening. I shrugged and hopped on the A train and made my waydown to Soho xferring once.

When I resurfaced, everything was drenched but it wasn't raining atall. However, it was still overcast. I smiled, proud that I had missedthe rain entirely.

I picked up a shower curtain, an air mattress and a huge Britta pitchertub thing along with a 5 pack of filters. However, as I eyed the 4 and5-cup coffee makers at the wholesale place I was shopping at, I heard acrazy-loud crack of thunder. By the time I made it to the cashier, itwas pouring down.

Luckily, I was about a half block from my subway stop, so I managed toavoid getting too wet...until I got to the stairs, that is.

The stairs that led down to the subway station were being drenched undera nearly constant shaft of water streaming down from the roof of anearby building. The roof seemed to be designed to spew water rightdown onto the steps and the wind made the shaft dance around the leftside of the stairwell, making any dry travel past it impossible.

One by one, all of us who needed that particular stop made our way pastthe shaft getting one side of our bodies pretty wet. As we reached thebottom of the stairs we came face-to-face with about a dozen peoleeyeing the stairs with extreme hesitation. To them there was a monsoonabove them. All they could see was the huge shaft of water splashingacross the stairs. The guy in front of me told them all it wasn'tcoming down anywhere near as hard once you got past the shaft of water.

As I type this, I'm back on the A heading uptown to TheNewPad. The guyon the loudspeaker just announced that the A is stopping at all localstops. For some reason he repeated it over and over.

"All local stops. All local stops. All local stops. All local stops. All local stops. All local stops. All local stops. "

I guess people get mad when they get on a train that's supposed to be anexpress only to have it make every stop on the long trip up theisland--something like 200 blocks and maybe 12 stops from where I goton.

So, that's the latest! Tonight TheWife has a couple parties to go toand I have yet to decide if I'll join her or not. I may just find a'Bucks and spend some quality time on the 'net with some iced coffee. Ireally need to be more social, though. Maybe once we get moresettled...

TheNYCMove day 33(?): The full move-in Post-Poned

Sadly, that plan I mentioned yesterday? Well, it got totally shot to hell when we discovered that U-Haul doesn't have a "free-miles" plan and Penske is only open until 3pm on Saturday and 12 noon on Sunday. Even if we rented the moving van right when they opened, we'd be unable to get the thing back in time. We can't keep it for more than a day because of the parking issue--where could we park a 17 foot moving van? Oh and can I just say what a dickweed the guy I spoke to at U-Haul was? Man, he made it sound like I was a moron when I asked if there was a way to NOT get charged for miles. As though it was in the Constitution or something.

Wasn't it Thomas Jefferson who once said: "No man shall get free miles while renting a vehicle that hold his belongings."

Oh wait, no he didn't. Damn, I should have gotten the U-Haul jerk's name.

Anyway, so the NEW plan is to buy an air mattress to sleep on (I've had it with our friend's sofa bed) and use it at the new place Saturday night and until we get our mattress from Jersey. Then clean the new place up after hiring a car service to get most of the stuff we've been living with (including the cats) up to our new pad. Sunday we'll take anything that didn't make it into the hired car onto the subway (if possible), even if it takes more than one trip. If we have some time, we'll head down to Pearl River Market (an AMAZING place filled with great Asian-themed home furnishings) and pick up some apartment stuff. Then, Monday morning we spend the day doing the original plan.

On Wednesday, we've got the new Ikea in Brooklyn opening, so we'll head out there for the basic furniture we'll need (bed frame, couch, book cases, TV stand, kitchen table) and have it delivered. Everything else we need I hope we'll find at Pearl River or at place nearby called National Wholesale Liquidators, both down in Soho.

Hm, that reminds me--we don't have a TV--we'll have to work out a time to pick one up. o_O

Sorry to babble on, but it's helping me work out what the plan is.

You'd think doing something as simple as moving in would be easier.

Above is my website loading on my eee pc as it sits on the floor of ournew apartment!!!

Yep, we're finally inside our new pad on the island of Manhattan. Westill have a LOT of work to do, though. Tomorrow we rent the moving vanand drive out to Jersey to get our stuff. Then we drive the van back tothe place we've been staying to grab all of the stuff we've been livingoff of and then, after hooking up with my friend Chris, drive the van upto our place on the north end of the island in an area called Inwood. Then we drag everything in. Then, on Sunday we make a trip to Ikea andorder delivery!

At least, that's the plan. Actual results may vary, please check yourlocal listings for time and station, offer void in Utah. ;)

Of course because it's already past 8pm we will be spending one morenight on our friend's sofa bed. :(

But tomorrow night we'll be sleeping in our own New York apartment!!!

All right, so Ron Paul's not a total quitter, but I don't get why he won't run as an independent candidate. I don't like a goodly chunk of what he stands for, but ANY kind of viable 3rd party candidate would benefit our country. The two party system has gotten us into this two-country war, ruined our economy, stranded us with foreign oil as our only real energy source and helped rob us of any responsible news media.

SOMEone's got to offer us real choice EVENTUALLY.

So, yesterday we were out and about again, as usual, this time despite the heat. We traveled mostly by rail so it wasn't too bad. However by the end of the day a nice thunderstorm rolled in and cooled things down a bit. And I mean a BIT. We still slept with the fans aimed directly at the sofa bed.

Oh and one other thing, I was putting together the title cards late last night and my writing was not the best--I think one of the title cards has more "the's" in it than "War and Peace." Sorry about that. I try to proofread everything, but I was tired and wanted to go to bed.

From ThePete.Com: 2g 3G iPhone (!):

Soooo, the 2nd generation iPhone that uses 3G tech.. http://tinyurl.com/3s8ryh

2g 3G iPhone (!)

utterz-image
Soooo, the 2nd generation iPhone that uses 3G technology was announced today by his Steve-ness and, as usual, I'm kind of unimpressed. I knew I wouldn't go with a 1g (1st generation) iPhone because it usually takes Apple a couple tries to get stuff right. However, I expected a bit more from the 2g 3G (!) iPhone. Sure, the GPS is great, the higher data rate (download speed) 3G can bring is also great and the lower pricing (8GB=$200, 16GB=$300) is definitely welcome, but still no Flash support? Still no video recording?

I saw somewhere that you can record video on the current iPhone with a 3rd party app. Usually when something like this happens it only takes Apple one iteration of a product to add the features of that 3rd party app to said product. Not so this time. So, if I get this new iPhone, I'll still have to keep my SLVR around for mobile video recording. :\ Lame.

Then there's the lack of a user-facing camera. This wasn't make or break for me, but it's so easy to do, you'd think they'd have done it. With the 3G connection speeds low-end video chat is totally doable. Odds are someone will still do it and we'll just need a mirror to make it work, but Apple could have made it easy for us.

People are also upset about the new plastic casing for the iPhone, but the metal casing of the 1g iPhone probably limited signal reception dramatically. I have a MotoSLVR that is largely metal and while it feels nice and solid in my hand, it's often hard for me to get a signal, while my plastic Sidekick 3 gets nearly full bars. So while not the metal backing we iPod-o-philes are used to, it will help reception and to be honest, look pretty damn slick, too.

So, where am I going with all of this? Well, for the price, I'll definitely be picking up a 2g 3G iPhone. I'm living in a new city and just today I got semi-lost trying to find the nearest Starbucks to where I was in the 100+ degree Manhattan heat. I'm all over that new GPS thing. MUST know where I am and where I need to go in heat like this. My head felt like it was going to explode today. I'm not kidding. It felt all puffy and when I made it home today a glance in the mirror made me wonder if my face was always that red-ish/purple. O_O

Yes, a comprehensive GPS feature is very welcome, thanks.

As far as calling plans go, I'm hoping to stick with T-Mo (T-Mo has 3G in NYC now), but if not, I'm hoping to find a pre-paid data plan from AT&T since I will be using the iPhone for data only. I seem to recall, during the early days of the first iPhone, that there was a way to enter all zeros for your social security number and have it default you to some sort of pre-paid account. I wonder if this is still the case.

And what about cut & paste? One of the most basic features in the world of computing was left out of the first iPhone--is it in the second?

Sooo many questions!

But that's my plan now. My Sidekick 3 has served me well, but it's time to upgrade and considering that the high-end 2g/3G iPhone is $100 *cheaper* than my Sidekick was when I bought it (almost 2 years ago, now) I think it's a perfectly reasonable thing to do even from an economic standpoint. Hell this new iPhone will hold 5 gigs less than my first iPod could and that cost me $400 just like the SK3!

The other thing is that because it's, essentially, going to be the new RAZR (it's so cheap!) I'm sure there will be loads of people developing apps and hacks for it. I have a feeling we'll see support for everything short of Flash before too long.

Now comes the hard part--I know I want it, now I've just got to wait for it. Four weeks from this Friday is when the 2g 3G iPhone comes out--July 11, 2008. Ugh.

I'd better have an apartment by then. ;)

The opening is tomorrow from 7-9 so if you can stop by then, that'd be even better--that's when I'll be going. If you can't make it then, that's OK--the show runs from June 7 to June 21. I'll be posting pictures of our work soon, but if you can see it in person, that's really the best.

Oh and our pieces are for sale, too--buy 'em and support us! (Hey, just showing up supports us!)
