Finally got United.com to acknowledge my cancelled flight but JFK, LGA & EWR are all closed still w/no estimate on when they'll open. #screencap

via Instagram http://instagr.am/p/RapTvHSrk0/

Just read that 750,000 NYers are without power. Sympathies to them, for sure. But understand there are 8 million NYers.

Sick of hearing/seeing news reports about how "much of New York City is without power." Bullshit. Most of New York City has power. Saying "Some of NYC is without power" is more accurate. Even "A good number of New York homes are without power." But when you use a word like "much" it suggests the word "most". And that's clearly not the case. Incidentally, I got the 8 million number from Wikipedia.  When any news source says something like "much of New York City is without power," it causes people to be concerned/worried/afraid for nothing.  It essentially does the opposite of what the news media is supposed to do.  It uninforms people.

In fact, I've been pretty surprised to see the amount of sensationalism going on in the mainstream media over the past couple days. I mean, this storm provided plenty of it's own spectacle and will for a while--there's no need to exaggerate it by making stuff up or failing to confirm what you are about to report. I saw an AP report claim that Sandy had caused "much" of the city to lose power. Not true. Most of the blackouts were caused by ConEd cutting the power on purpose, before flooding could cause bigger problems like fires or, I'd imagine, electrocutions.  Sure, there was one sub-station explosion that cause some power to go out for 250,000 NYers, according to an NPR report I heard this morning, but what about the other 500,000?

It's so funny to me--reality is exciting, and at times scary, enough all by itself. Why do we have to sex everything up so much?

Great. Now I can't even get AirCanada.com to load. Is this somehow #sandy 's doing? I wanna go home... #screencap

#Sandy's Howling Winds in #Toronto and I'm going to bed!

Weather.com seems to have a much more accurate-seeming wind speed estimate for #Toronto than Weather Bug did. #pic

via Instagram http://instagr.am/p/RZOFiSSroR/

Weather Bug is saying winds in #Toronto are only 13mph but the wind is howling like a banshee outside... no way it's that slow. #screencap #sandy

OK, turns out the #WallStreet trading floor may NOT be under 3 feet of water. #wishfulthinking #justkidding #notreally

Dude. just reported that the trading floor is under water--3 feet of it! !!!

#Sandy now looks to stretch from #Charlotte to #Toronto (where I am) and deep into #NewEngland, too. This #screencap is insane.

Watching CNN's coverage and wondering why they think they need to be out in in order to report on it.

I swore off regular TV years ago. So I find commercials reeeeally annoying. I'm also reeeeally annoyed by the fact that CNN is running commercials during their coverage of Sandy. What surprises me even more is that a lot of the commercials are political ones for Obama or Romney.

There was one commercial which looked like a TED Talk but it was in China and it was being done by an Asian actor with an audience full of Asian actors. The guy doing the talk speaks in Chinese but there are subtitles which are talking about countries that have "failed," why they have "failed," and how countries like America "work for us now."

My wife posted about this spot on Facebook and a friend commented that this spot was only running outside the US. See, we're in Toronto. Apparently, politicians want to influence citizens of other countries?? Can't say that I understand that. Or maybe they want to influence American citizens in other countries? Surely, there aren't THAT many Americans abroad that it's worth trying to scare us into voting for Romney. Surely, that's a waste of their Super PAC money :/

Surely...

#Pic of my netbook screen displaying United.com telling me my flight is on schedule but an Air Canada guy just told me it was canceled. Flt leaves in 8m.

via Instagram http://instagr.am/p/RVktJXSriH/

Crap...I'm screwed. Flight was cancelled after I left for the airport. May be stuck in Toronto until Friday.

Joy.

OK I still hate flying. My ticket is through Untied but the flight is operated by Air Canada. Was in the wrong line & am now late.

Bleh... track maintenance west of Keele meant I had to say bye to @SierraRein even earlier :( on a shuttle bus to Kipling.

From Kipling I hop on another bus to Toronto Pearson International Airport. As I type this it's 1pm EST and my flight leaves at 3:15. I have no data connection right now but hopefully I'll find one at the airport to send this off. If not, you're reading this waaaay after I wrote it :)

Anyway, I had a really fun time in Toronto--thanks for the five-day weekend, Sierra! I love you!

-thepete 1:02pm 10/28/12

Leaving today on an aeorplane...gotta get to New York City before does!!

So, I've rescheduled my flight from Toronto to LGA from Monday at 1:15pm
to today at 3:15. I'll be flying United 8230. This should put me in
around 4:45ish and that will give me plenty of time to catch a bus back
to Manhattan and then the A train up to W 193rd St before the MTA shuts
everything down at 7pm (the full trip from La Guardia takes about 1h15m).

Before leaving for Toronto, I had finished all of my perishable food,
but left behind a loaf of bread, pasta and frozen spinach and chicken so
I've got plenty of food. As soon as I get home, I'll make sure the
Britta tub is full, and will likely fill up as many other receptacles
(sports bottles, travel mugs and probably even our giant stew pot) that
I own with water, too. I still have plenty of candles and matches from
when I prepared for Irene last year, so I think I've got everything covered.

I'm also going to plug in all of my electronics, so if we do lose power,
I'll have everything fully charged. Obviously, if there's a lot of
lightning I'll unplug everything and turn it off.

Wish all of us in the northeast luck!! It's going to be worse than
Irene by the looks of it!

Ummm...weee??

Mother Nature does NOT like me in Canada. The last time I was here was in 1993 and I had to leave early due to the Great Nor'easter of '93 (aka The Storm of the Century).

Read about that last storm, I apparently caused by going to Canada, on Wikipedia here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1993_Storm_of_the_Century

Luckily, the storm in '93 only cut our vacay short by a day, so I'm not complaining about that. We just hopped in my car and headed back to Syracuse. It's just that I flew this time and jockeying flights around is a PitA. Plus, if Bloomberg decides to shut down the subways and buses (like he did the day before Irene arrived in '11), I'll be stranded at LGA since I know no one in NYC with a car. As of now, I changed my flight to Sunday evening so, hopefully that will be OK. But if King Mike announces he's shutting down the MTA, I may decide to cancel our Sunday trip to Niagara Falls and try to get on a red-eye back to NYC. Sheesh... if this happens every time I go to Canada, I'm never going again!!

Satellite Sees Hurricane Sandy Approach the U.S. East Coast [animation]

Official NASA caption: "An animation of satellite observations from Oct. 24-26, 2012, shows Hurricane Sandy crossing eastern Cuba and moving through and exiting the Bahamas. This visualization was created by the NASA GOES Project at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md., using observations from NOAA's GOES-13 satellite.

Comment from me: holy crap, that is one big storm! I hope I make it back to NYC before Sandy does!

#Pic of a block in the Nassau Street area of #Toronto. Note the top floor of that one building cut in half. Also, there's the CN Tower in the background. It's the #ChinaTown area also.

Here is a #pic of The Electric Theatre in #Toronto. I've seen many theaters in many cities/countries, but I've never seen one with an alien painted on it. #awesome!

The whole area around Nassau St. is as if St. Marks, in Manhattan, collided with Berkeley, CA,or parts of SF. Somehow quaint and cool at the same time. Check the #pic to see what I mean.
