TheGlassLog: Sometimes it's good to be Glassy (#Google Threw Us a #Glass Party!)

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Photo by @SierraRein[/caption]

Google threw us a party! YAY!

One of the big fat pills we Glass Explorers had to swallow was the price of entry into our exclusive little club. $1500 (plus tax!) for the right to beta test Google's new gadget seems to most folks to be a lot to ask. I wish Google hadn't done it this way, for strictly selfish reasons, but I understand why they did it. They wanted to make sure we were invested in putting Glass through its paces. The best way to make sure we're invested? Make us invest!

But with all that money we've all spent, a lot of us have been wondering if we'd be seeing any other bang for our bucks. I read a couple people online say that they hoped to see Google give each of us Explorers the first consumer version of Glass for free. That sure would be nice, but as we're still many moons from that, it's nice to see Google showing some appreciation in the meantime. Last night was the Glass Explorer Social--a big party thrown in honor of us.

TechDirt.com reports on how Lavabit founder may end up arrested for shutting down his service.

via Instagram http://instagram.com/p/dPltN6yri5/

OK, this is really starting to get creepy now. The USG may arrest a guy for closing down his business? A business he shut down because he didn't want to comply with a request by the USG he felt was wrong?

America: Land of the (not) free!

If you haven't already seen it, check out the interview That the founder of Lavabit did on Democracy Now: http://www.democracynow.org/2013/8/13/exclusive_owner_of_snowdens_email_service

My favorite bit was when he is asked if he recieved a National Security Letter from the USG and he explained that he wasn't allowed to say.

NYTimes interviews the founder of LavaBit.com and explains why he committed business suicide.

via Instagram http://instagram.com/p/c9aRc7yrnm/

From the article:
“I’ve always sort of believed it’s important for Americans to have private conversations with other Americans,” Mr. Levison said in a telephone interview Monday, “and not fear that their conversations were being monitored by the government.”

More:
Lavabit’s mysterious legal drama began six weeks ago. One of its more than 400,000 users was Edward J. Snowden, the leaker who had worked as a National Security Agency contractor. Mr. Levison has not said whether or what kind of government order he was served with, or how it might have been served.

His lawyer, Jesse Binnall, made it clear that Lavabit had complied with “narrowly tailored” court orders for user information on at least two dozen occasions in the past.

Mr. Levison, now 32 and living in Dallas, added: “What I’m opposed to are blanket court orders granting government access to everything.

More scary stuff from the surveillance state. Or should I say the police state? This is what a police state looks like. We're still a Police State Lite, but the fact that the USG feels the need to collect data on all of us means that we're all potential criminals, which is, by definition I believe, a police state.

Luckily, no one is getting arrested for what they say or write, that we know of. In a country where the government lies and obfuscates to it's people and the country's news media largely plays along, how can we know for sure that it won't come to that, or isn't there already?

TheAtlantic.com: big Internet companies are being commandeered by the USG.

via Instagram http://instagram.com/p/c9UvbSyrug/

From the opinion piece:
We're already starting to see that. Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and others are pleading with the government to allow them to explain details of what information they provided in response to National Security Letters and other government demands. They've lost the trust of their customers, and explaining what they do -- and don't do -- is how to get it back. The government has refused; they don't care.

Read the whole piece: http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2013/08/the-nsa-is-commandeering-the-internet/278572/

This is seriously scary stuff and is right on the money. Corporations and the USG are beholden to each other in a way us normal civilians once were but can now never be. We don't have the money to be important enough to the USG. The USG is too corrupt and, by definition, corporations are only in it for the money, so... we're screwed.

I feel strongly that we need an Independent Internet--a network of devices that link together and don't necesarily rely on a mega-corporation to provide a "backbone" of hardware or of services. I think it's well within the abilities of technology available to us to create a new Internet that could function outside of the control of both corporations AND the USG or any government for that matter.

TheGlassLog: Sideloading real #Android Apps onto #Google #Glass and Livestreaming and Instagramming from Glass

[caption id="attachment_13117196222" align="aligncenter" width="560"]Believe it or not, Instagram works on Glass. It's getting it on there that's a pain (and even then, it's not perfect, but sooo close!) Believe it or not, Instagram works on Glass. It's getting it on there that's a pain (and even then, it's not perfect, but sooo close!)[/caption]

Ever since I first read that the OS that runs on Glass was a tweaked version of Android, I was curious about running real Android apps on it. As I've mentioned before, what Google calls Glass apps aren't apps in the traditional sense at all, but services. Sadly, many Glass devs are accepting of Google's misnomer and now refer to Android apps running on Glass as "native" apps, when really they should just be called "apps." But whatever. The point is, Glass is still cool and it's even cooler when you run real, full-featured apps.

So, last Saturday, I set about learning how to sideload and that's when things got interesting. But there was a complication I overlooked. Even if I could get the Ustream app to sideload and run (as indie-journalist Tim Pool has), how could I log in without a way to type in my login credentials? Whoops.

Well, this wouldn't be much of a post if I didn't work out how to do it. That said, keep reading to find out how I did.

WARNING: While some in the media call this procedure "hacking Glass," I call it "following instructions" and "standing on the shoulders of better devs than myself." Seriously. To learn how to do this, all I had to do was do Internet searches for what I wanted to do and do what others have already done. Well, almost... I did have to get creative with entering text, since most folks don't seem to mind dropping cash on Bluetooth keyboards (and then adding said keyboards to the gear they carrying around) when they don't really have to.

WARNING MARK 2: After doing everything you are about to read, I discovered that system sounds on my Glass became very quiet. For a few days, I thought they simply weren't playing. No swipe or tap sound effects, no chimes chiming when I take photos or shoot video or when new content arrives. But while troubleshooting, I discovered, I could hear them, but incredibly faintly. I can live without all of these sounds except for that new content chime. Since the Glass display doesn't turn on automatically when new content arrives (like I think it certainly should) I have to rely on the chime to let me know when new content arrives. I don't know what caused the audio volume to drop so much, but I suspect it has something to do with the new settings APK I installed. The weird thing is that is some areas, the audio is fine and the microphone level isn't changed at all in any areas. I'm still debating a factory reset. I may wait for XE8, the next version of the Glass OS to see if that will fix it. I may not.

DISCLAIMER: BY CONTINUING TO READ YOU AGREE THAT YOU CAN'T HOLD ME RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS TO YOUR GLASS. I am telling you what I've done and how I've done it for research purposes only and describe only my own experience. I hope things work as well or better for use than they did for me. However, you might just get really unlucky. I hope that doesn't happen, but if it does, it's not my fault. Keep reading if you agree.

TheGlasLog: Living in the Big Apple with Glass

Yesterday morning my wife and i were on our way to midtown for the day where we had various errands/meetings etc, together and on our own to do/have. As always when I go out, I was wearing Glass. On the way to the subway, a random stranger stopped us... and asked where the nearest subway station was.

Over the following afternoon of wearing it to Starbucks, Subway (the fast food place), and several other places with LOADS of humans, not one of them approached me about Glass.

Just before going home, I stopped off at Trader Joe's and had my Glass hanging around my neck by one of those strings designed for glasses. As the very energetic and hip cashier lady scanned my items, she pointed at my chest and said something I didn't understand.

"Sorry?" I said.

From yesterday: Trash & Train, but not #TrashTrain I'm amazed people litter in NYC. Do they not get that they're dirtying their own lawn?

TheGlassLog: Why Google #Glass Needs a Lock Screen (and a lot more): Finding something like this in your stream:

[caption id="attachment_13117196197" align="aligncenter" width="560"]Of all the words Glass could have caught, it was this one. I don't even remember saying it. Of all the words Glass could have caught, it was this one. I don't even remember saying it.[/caption]

Of course, there are quite a few things that Glass needs but a lockscreen is definitely one of them. Sure, Mike DiGiovanni coded one and has made the code available (get the code here) but he hasn't made an APK of it available yet. While I do know how to sideload APKs onto Glass (I learned how to do it here, at the Applied GlassWare blog), I haven't educated myself enough to know how to compile code into an APK (that's the file extension for an Android app, in case you were wondering).
